  • Chinese New Year Flowers...

As part of the Chinese New Year traditions that I started a few years back, I got some flowers for the house. Instead of the usual peach blossoms and yellow chrysanthemums popular for the holiday, I choose some green ones and a cream colored variety with a golden center.

I've had them since last Sunday and they're still going strong after more than a week. Hopefully, they'll bring me good luck!

  • 25 Random Things About Me...

    1. I have flat feet and wear ergonomic shoe inserts that provide arch support so that I can walk without my feet being on fire.

    2. I sleep like a corpse… meaning on my back and never move much at all during the night. My blanket is usually pulled up to my chin, which is how I imagine it’s like at the morgue.

    3. I had Lasik in 2005. Loves it!

    4. My preferred Starbucks drink is a Grande Soy Misto. It used to be a Grande Soy Latte but ordering a misto saves me a dollar.

    5. I acted in a play called “Okinawa 1945” at the Noh Space Theater in San Francisco.

    6. I took voice lessons while in Hong Kong from a professional singer who sings backup for Joey Yung (a Chinese pop star). She helped me “discover” my range with falsetto.

    7. I used to hide inside the huge oval-shaped, aisle-long clothing racks at Price Club when I was a kid.

    8. I always carry a small bottle of eye drops with me as my eyes get a little dry sometimes as an after effect of Lasik. But I never take out the bottle when I go through the TSA security check for liquids on carry-on baggage at the airport. They’ve never noticed and this better not jinx it! Heheh…

    9. I love Targe't! Shop there at least once a week and try to buy all my necessities at Targe't unless it was a huge emergency and I needed the item ASAP. Costco not so much love as I can’t stand the crowding and the bulk quantities.

    10. I love everything Muji!

    11. I love my George Foreman grill!

    12. Hardy anyone I know has seen me with braces on even though I had them for four years. I had braces super early and finished by the time I got to the 8th grade.

    13. I don’t really believe in horoscopes and astrology but I do believe in miracles.

    14. I taught myself how to read Chinese from karaoke and tabloid magazines from Hong Kong.

    15. I read the news from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China everyday online to keep up with my Chinatown connection.

    16. I consider both San Francisco and Hong Kong my home but have very little good things to say about each city.

    17. I try to do all of my leisure reading in Chinese. It helps me nurture my Chinese psyche.

    18. I love drinking green tea… at least 3 cups a day.

    19. I learned the hard way that yoga is not a good substitute for cardio, weights and a general workout routine. Basically, if you stop working out and just do yoga you will gain weight.

    20. If I die today, I want to know that I tried my best to take good care of my family… especially my parents.

    21. Sometimes when I drive home late at night, I wonder if I’m actually a dead person like Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense. I just don’t know that I’m dead. Other people don’t either.

    22. I believe that maintaining any kind of meaningful relationship (be it romantic, family, friendships) is like holding on to a pile of sand with your bare hands. Try and grasp too hard and the sand will slip out of your fingers.

    23. I don’t drink alcohol as it makes me explode. So on the rare occasions when I go out, I usually order a Red Bull on ice to wake up and use as a prop.

    24. I will on occasion mispronounce certain words like “prominition” instead of “premonition” or… pronounce naiveté as “naivettttte” instead of “naïve-vah-tay.” It’s just a little embarrassing but not too bad. I’m not perfect and you know what I meant. Plus, I can say all of that fluently in Chinese Cantonese and Mandarin!

    25. I’m glad this is #25 as it’s almost time for bikram yoga…

  • Letting Them Get the Best of You...

As human beings, we are always changing and evolving with along with all things natural. For most people, experience makes us wiser while time brings our bodies down.

In your life, is there anyone from the past who you wish could see how wise you've become now? At the present, is there anyone you wish could have enjoyed your company in a past and better physical form?

This song was recorded about five years ago. I'm sure I sound a little different now. Allergies have not been kind to my voice...
